President Museveni Postpones Martyrs' Day Celebrations Over Ebola Outbreak Risks

KAMPALA — In a major public health directive, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has announced the indefinite postponement of the annual Martyrs' Day celebrations, originally scheduled for June 3rd. The decision follows urgent consultations with the National Epidemic Response Task Force and key religious leaders to protect citizens against cross-border transmission of the deadly Ebola virus.

The presidential statement heavily emphasizes preventive safety measures. Thousands of pilgrims travel to Uganda's Namugongo shrines from Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) annually, a region that is currently facing an active Ebola outbreak. Health officials warn that such massive cross-border gatherings could trigger widespread local infections.

"This decision was made because Uganda receives thousands of pilgrims annually from Eastern Congo, which is currently experiencing an Ebola outbreak. To safeguard everyone's lives, it is essential that this important event be postponed," the statement reads. "We regret any inconvenience caused, but the protection of life must come first."

The President has directed all foot pilgrims who have already commenced their journeys to halt further movement, return home safely, and continue observing strict health guidelines. The public is urged to look out for symptoms associated with the Ebola virus and report any suspected illness to the nearest medical authorities immediately.
